Will a 2005 CD changer work in a 2004?
As the title states, I have an 04' sedan whose CD changer no longer works (the standard Mazda 3 6 disc in dash CD changer). I found one from a junked 05' on ebay, and it states that this part will fit an 05'. My brother has an 05' and from the outside (he won't let me take his audio console out to compare with mine), it doesn't appear to be any different, however I know that doesn't mean anything. Can somebody with some expertise tell me if they are different, and save me from wasting my money? FYI I'm not planning on keeping this car for more than another year (which is why I'm looking for a CHEAP replacement rather than something new), but in the meantime I would like to be able to listen to CD's until I get rid of the car.

Assuming you're in the US then I can say, yes, the '05 changer will work in your '04. Actually you get a bit of an "upgrade" since the '05 one should also have a "SAT" button on it just in case you want to add sirius to the car. The problem with compatibility comes in the '06 HU where they separated the LCD wiring harness from the main HU wiring harness so there are two plugs intsead of one. That being said I'm not sure if you could just use the changer portion of a 2006 model and have it work vs. using the entire HU from a '06 and it not working.
In any case I digress. Yes it will work. Oh and you're brother's a pansy (j/k).... you can pull the HU in less than 5 minutes with just your fingers and a phillips head screwdriver.
