DPF removed oil usage
#3
I put in a full tank of diesel last week and checked oil and topped it up to the full mark, I now have about half a tank of diesel left and the oil is half way between the full and empty mark. I notice a thick cloud of smoke when starting the car occasionally (I thought this was due to the dpf being removed). I have no visible leaks under the bonnet or on my drive, iv not lost any power when driving and iv checked the water and its not been contaminated.
Oh and there is no oily residue on or around the exhaust area.

Hi,
I've just had the DPF removed on my M5 as well. I haven't noticed any oil drop initially at least but will keep an eye on it now. Mind you its so hard to actually get a good reading on the level as you only get one chance as far as I can tell. Once the stick has been out once it seems to leave a trace of oil in the pipe which smears all over the stick if you try to read again.
Anyways, I'll keep an eye on it and post back.
One other thing that I have noticed since removing the DPF is a distinctly diesel smell from the car - sometimes even inside.

Not getting any movement on my dipstick. Had it removed 6 months ago.
Yes I get a bit more of a diesel smell, but only on start up. And it will be a bit more smokey on start up and hard acceleration, you have removed a bloody great big catch tank and restriction in the exhaust.

If it is using that much more oil (assuming you are following correct procedure each time you read it) I'd be worrying about either the head gasket or the seals on the valves.
It is not a bad idea for the oil level (hot engine, let it rest for about 5mins) to read about 3/4. Always leave some ullage for expansion.
Removing the DPF will not affect oil usage, but it will ruin your emissions, so if you have the MOT coming, you'll probably need to refit it.
