Default 1000 miles on Mazda 5

MPG is improving slightly. Got about 1000 miles on the 2012 Mazda 5, stick shift. Mostly city/small hiway drive. Fill up today and got 27.5 mpg. Car is about 1 month old now. Am taking trip to Washington DC from Massachusetts next month, so I will see what we get on a long hiway run.

Wish I had the 6-speed. My gauge is reading 14.8 mpg with a half tank to go (easy, but hilly city driving mostly). I got 13.5 driving my CX-9 with the pedal to the metal.

Another tankful: calculated at 16.8 mpg vs. the dash gauge reading 15.9. Only one tank of 7 or 8 fill-ups had the gauge reading better. This tank was driving very conservatively, mostly city, with lots of hills. I'm at about 1,600 miles on the odometer now.

I find these numbers astounding, I mean geez, even our three (yes, three) 3.8 liter Chrysler Minivans never-EVER got worse than 17 pg, and that was in and out of Manhattan during rush-hour in the dead of winter. The flip side is that during the summer I once coaxed 28.2 mpg over a 500+ mile tank of fuel from our 1998 Grand Caravan Sport 3.8.

Given that your Mazda5 has MUCH more in common with my Mazda3 than any of our Mopar vans, and given that the worst I've ever gotten from my Mazda was 27 mpg (driven hard during the winter), I'm inclined to think there's something wrong with your car.

Good idea. I'll call my dealer tomorrow to inquire. I live in San Diego at the top of a pretty big hill, so I'm constantly driving up and down hills, and don't get on the freeway too often (comparatively). This tank I really tried to use a "feather-foot" to see how high I could get the mileage. By contrast, I got 13.0-14.5 in my old CX-9, so I was way below the quoted mpg with that one, too.

I used to live in San Diego area back in the 1970s (my college and Marine Corps era), and while I lived there I drove a 1970 Challenger with a 340 4-Speed (Pistol Grip shifter and all), and even with that rig I don't think I ever saw mileage as poor as what you're seeing, and I drove plenty of hills every day too. Go figure.

I was at MCRD and Pendleton in 1966. Moved here from the midwest in 1992.
