Fuel economy of my new mazda5

Took my 2012 Mazda5 GT on a trip from San Diego to San Luis Obispo and return: about 650 miles. I had to go get my son from college and all his "stuff." The car was loaded to the gills on the way home, but actually got better mileage because of fewer traffic delays through L.A. Gassed up on the way out on town and when arriving back home.

Most open road driving was at 70-80 mph. My new TomTom GPS device indicated that my speedo was reading low by 1.0-1.5 mph, a result of my aftermarket 225/40-18 tires. Thus, my "actual" trip mpg was probably more like 25.2 mpg. I think I could top 30mpg at a steady 60mph, though.

The K&N won't do anything to improve your mileage and unless you switch to a thinner oil that is specified for your car, the Scamzoil won't help your mileage either. Save your money, stick with standard air filters and go with a good quality 5W-20 or even a 0W-20 synthetic oil available at your local retailer.

Mazda5 2012. First road trip MA to Washington DC.

Drove mostly 60-65. Drove locally in DC to Mt Vernon. Heavy traffic to DC, but not bad on return. Hot, 85-90 degrees, so had AC on much of the trip. I think I probably could get 35mpg with less traffic and cooler temps. I am very happy with the Mazda5's first road trip mileage.
p.s. Now have about 3,000 miles on the new car, so hopefully the mileage will remain at least this good.

It seems the Mazda5 is yet another example where, even though the EPA ratings are virtually identical between Manual and Automatic transmissions, cars equipped with a stick return significantly better fuel economy in the real world that does that same car with an automatic.

In my first gas up on way to DC in CT, I actually got 40 MPG (2.5 gals, 110 miles). Not sure how that happened, but that didn't hold up the rest of the trip.
