Default Epic Summer Roadtrip -- Mileage for First Half

Here's the mileage update for the first half of our epic (4500 mile) summer roadtrip. Car is a '12 Mazda5 GT. Glad to see that highway EPA claims are possible even at 70-75 mph and mountains.

Date Odo Miles Gal Act Trip $/Gal Area Terrain Appx Speed
7/9/2011 2065 404.5 14.099 28.7 28.3 $3.48 Dallas - MO Flat 70
7/10/2011 2464 398.6 13.205 30.2 28.1 $3.70 MO - Indy Hilly 70
7/16/2011 2797 333.0 13.206 25.2 25.3 $3.60 Around Indy Flat
7/19/2011 3173 376.1 13.488 27.9 27.9 $3.60 Indy to Penn Flat 74
7/20/2011 3555 381.5 13.487 28.3 28.0 $3.80 Penn to RI Hill to Mtn 73

Sorry for the bad data formatting, but I can't figure out how to get Excel data to paste as a table. Maybe someone can enlighten me.

There might be an easier way, but I usually do these manually. Sometimes the separating dots are necessary because the forum software sometimes will not add blank spaces.

That's a lot better than the 24.8 mpg I got on a 700-mile trip in SoCal in my 2012 5 GT.

Just went to the Mobil station:

216.6 miles
13.466 gallons
16.08 mpg
15.20 mpg per computer

Hilly, city driving mostly.

Ouch! I mean geez, the three 3.8 liter Chrysler minivans we've had for a combined 350,000 miles never once got mileage that bad.

that mileage is horrible. either you were seriously in the throttle or there my be another issue going on. hills or no hills it should not be that low.

My last two tanks (450 miles) were about 65-70% freeway and conservatively driven. They averaged 17.5 mpg.

Geez that sucketh much. Our big honking 3.8 liter Chrysler Minivans do more like 25 on the highway and easily get 22 to 23 in a 70/30 mix (even with the A/C blasting). I'm still of the opinion there's something wrong with your car, and this just reinforces that opinioin.

FWIW, I read a post on a different forum a few weeks back about a guy with at 2.5 liter Mazda3 who was getting lousy mileage; if I recall correctly, he had the ECU reflashed and his mileage instantly jumped up into the low to mid 20s. I'm thinking it's time for you to lean on your dealership to do something.

definitely something amiss with your vehicle, that's way too low to be acceptable

Guess I'll bring it in to the dealer. I HATE going there because:
  • They always want my car all day.
  • They won't pick me up when it's done because I live outside their drive radius.
  • Based on their previous comments, they'll probably just go through the motions so they can tell me at 5pm that there's nothing wrong with the car.
But, since it looks like one of my brake rotors is getting a little scored by the pad (and it squeaks), I'll have them check that out, too.
