Higher Revs Okay?

Higher Revs Okay?
Hi All,
I am a pretty conservative driver and tend to shift around the 3000 RPM mark. Under quicker acceleration I tend to go as high as around 4000.
My question is, is it harmful on the engine to run at higher revs, say shifting around 5000 and cruising at 3000+?
Now I know for a fact this would kill my gas mileage, but I also know that the 5 has far more power between 3000 & 4000 than at between 2000 & 3000. While it is also common sense that driving at higher revs would put more wear and tear on the engine, is it so hard on it as to actually damage things?
Curious on everyones thoughts.
(Before our 5, we had a 2007 VW GTI with 200 BHP, and I REALLY miss the power - just trying to get a little more fun outta my 5, but dont want to do any damage)

RE: Higher Revs Okay?
I'd say all modern cars are Autobahn proof. Otherwise there would be massive recalls and the car makers would go bankrupt. Driving persistantly on higher rpms will not harm the engine, provided high quality synthetic engine oil at normal operating temperature. What will kill it, is neglecting oil-changes, over-reving (red-line) especially when cold and overheating.
