intermittent billowing white maybe blue smoke
Hi all,
I have a 2006 5 sport diesel, 62k. Its just had a full service, inluding a DPF reset and no faults can be found - but every 8 or so trips it starts billowing white smoke (possibly with a bluey tinge) out the back for about 30 seconds to a minute and then stops doing it.
Does it whilst moving and stationary in traffic. Cant get it to do it for the garage, no visual oil leaks, back of the car does smell, I have simply no idea what it is?
Any advice?
Thanks

Hi, I have the same model but not had this prob, I think it could be the dpf burning off what its supposed to, here is what wikki says
A diesel particulate filter, sometimes called a DPF, is a device designed to remove diesel particulate matter or soot from the exhaust gas of a diesel engine. Wall-flow diesel particulate filters usually remove 85% or more of the soot, and can at times (heavily loaded condition) attain soot removal efficiencies of close to 100%. A diesel-powered vehicle equipped with a functioning filter will emit no visible smoke from its exhaust pipe.
In addition to collecting the particulate, a method must exist to clean the filter. Some filters are single-use (disposable), while others are designed to burn off the accumulated particulate, either through the use of a catalyst (passive), or through an active technology, such as a fuel burner which heats the filter to soot combustion temperatures, through engine modifications (the engine is set to run a certain specific way when the filter load reaches a pre-determined level, either to heat the exhaust gases, or to produce high amounts of NOx, which will oxidize the particulates at relatively low temperatures), or through other methods. This is known as "filter regeneration".
not sure if this is what going on just my 2 cent

to update - the car has been a total nightmare!! Went into Mazda dealer 5 times with the problem, every time told yes, we've changed the oil and de-clogged the DPF and reset it, plus they mucked about with injectors as well.
Kept on happening (smoke and power loss.)
This last week DPF light came on, power cut off, so we manually charged as manual says (15minutes above 2000rpm) and the light turned off and we carried on. 24 hours later flashing DPF light came on, power cut off. Had to be towed 200 miles (huge cost!) and then 4 days in garage, DPF clogged to 12%, they emptied it, still couldnt find why it was clogged, no reason.
Told from now on only light city driving, do most trips on motorway, with as many trips over 2000rpm for more than 15 minutes to keep DPF clear.
GREAT!! this is a family car, meaning for FAMILY use - e.g the school run which has to be done daily - not on a motorway!!
Got the car back this morning from the garage - drove it 21 miles on a motorway test drive - power cut off!!!!!!!!!!!! Drove directly to a dealer in another town (car supermarket place), traded it in and bought something else.
Has been a nightmare, Mazda themselves cannot rectify it, and come up with the bright idea of how to drive it as above - totally ridiculous.
Its gone, I pity the next person who buys it but I am soooooo glad to never see the damn thing again!
