Syncros are probably just close to being perfectly aligned.

Did anyone ever try to put the car into reverse when it was moving (Rolling Back)?

This particular annoyance will not ever damage the trans because the car is never moving when it happens.

Default mazda 5 reverse gear

cable has been changed, junction has been changed and all bits under bonnet where things seat have been checked. not put it into reverse when rolling, seems to be an intermittent problem. sometimes have no trouble putting it in reverse, other times it is a real nuisance and just wont sit back into its correct position. have tried going to first then back to reverse, worked once then didnt. checking out all options before continuing route of trading standards as, so far as i am concerned this problem could be sorted under warranty and the main dealer and mazda are claiming there is nothing wrong and it is a characteristic of the car. why is this an intermittent problem if it is classed as a characteristic though? and why have they tried numerous repairs before deciding its simply the way the car is? seems to be a case of not much time left on warranty and they cant be bothered spending any more time and money on it. incredibly frustrating as the car suits all our needs. thanks for all your ideas, much appreciated.

Yes, I agree, it sounds like your dealer just doesn't want to deal with the problem or admit that there may be one.
While all non-synchronized gears, especially those with a high ratio, can be a problem to get into once in a while, it should not be that common or that hard, especially if you have tried all the little tricks one learns when driving a manual.

massive help being sent advice from all at mazda forums, am in a local mazda garage on thursday for service and mot, staff there have been most helpful unlike the main dealer a little further away where the car was purchased. do feel like i am beating my head against a brick wall a little but am confident it will be sorted, as an experienced driver in heavy goods and domestic cars i am refusing to be dumped on!!! and the fact i can be a bit stroppy when i need to helps too!!

apart from problems reversing, the car came back from the dodgy dealer with an infuriating whistle which has only been discovered recently (45mph and above) seals are fine and all caps on under bonnet so am assuming something is not right from last lot of work!

never rains eh?! well thanks all and will let you know what happens after trip in on thursday-you really couldnt write this stuff, dodgy dealers are spoiling the relatively good name of mazda and ruining what should be great driving experiences. still there are worse things happening

night all

I have an 08 with a manual tranny - never any trouble with it ever - at around 30,000 km's so far, and so far the clutch and tranny have been perfect.

Sometimes its a little tricky getting it into first if slowing down, but every standard I have ever had have been like this... well, all but the VW gti I had...

Reverse is not synchronized. They do not synchronize it so that the trans can not be put in reverse when moving forward. Trying to put it into reverse while moving forward eats on the reverse idler and reverse gear making it harder and harder to get in gear as time goes by. Replacing the 2 gears will help but it will not help for long if you are moving even 1 mile an hour and try to hit reverse. They were correct when they told you it is a characteristic of the car. In your case there is probably some damage to the gears but it being unsynchronized is by design and IMO reverse should not be synchronized for safety reasons.
