Sat Nav Stereo System IPOD Option?
#21
Removing 09 Mazda5 Stereo / Sat Nav unit.
Deichkorn and all.....
Well I decided the more people that try this the more chance of someone working out how to connect the IPOD - so armed with a philips/cross head screwdrive, a 10mm socket with long extension and camera phone... I took my unit out again for the 4th time. Please see attached pic. Please note I'm not a mechanic so do this at your own risk.. I take no responsibility and all that....
First thing to note... take care... a lot of the removal process is brute force... most of the car is held together by plastic clips.. straight forward pulling / pushing action should be used - no bending or twisting as they will break. Also it is very easy to scratch the plastic!
Now following attached diagram.
Step 1) Rotate the gear **** (assume same on an automatic?) - the leather / material shroud thing will try and twist with it... once it comes lose only the **** itself will turn.
Step 2) Remove gear ****. Note metal spindel left is sharp / hard and will easily mark / crack your touch screen during a later step. You have been warnded!
Step 3) Carefully by pulling upwards (and maybe a little leverage in corners) the gear stick cover will lift off. Note four plastic clips in each corner. This is all that holds it in place so be firm as it will come up eventually.
Step 4) In the footwell the panel either side of the centre unit is attached by four plastic clips. Again firm pulling will remove this. Unclip from the front and then pull panel out forwards - there is a plastic bracket see step 5 so don't twist the back end of the panel. Repeat for other footwell.
Step 5) Showing plastic panel removed. Note arrow at back shows a plastic bracket. On the rear of the panel is a tounge that when returned back needs to go in this bracket. At the front you will notice one screw - remove this screw. Again repeating on other footwell.
Step 6) The entire centre cover can now be firmly pulled away again noting the plastic clips at the top of the panel. Now you can try and completely remove this plastic casing - you will need to disconnect the cigarette lighter, cigarette lighter bulb, and AUX audio connection.... but it is not completely necessary to remove it and I found caused so much scratching trying to get it out that if you can work around it then do so.
Step 7) Very akward to get to... but last two screws to be removed.... another warning - take great care if you drop a screw it will dissapear into the inner workings and never be seen again.
Step 8) With the two screws removed in step 7 all that holds the Air Con control panel in is four more plastic clips. Again very firm and even pressure you will find this unit comes out.
Step 9) You can unplug the Air Con control unit and put aside out the way. Please note... this connector is identical in size and shape to one that plugs into the stereo unit... don't get them confused!!! I did... luckily I only blew a fuse but I really don't think the stereo likes having an air con system plugged into it!
Step 10) You need a 10mm socket with long extension... there is one bolt holding the stereo in place. Again take care not to drop this bolt as it will dissapear for ever.
Step 11) The very scary part... I can only show one hand as other was holding camera but using both hands on the bottom of the unit... a very very very firm pull will eventually free the unit.
Step 12) Once free - as previously mentioned - do be careful of that sharp gear spindle just waiting to crack the LCD screen... remove the unit and if required disconnect all cabling... all but one are unique in size / shape but maybe make a note as you unplug them all.
Hope this has helped.

Think I have come to the end of this discussion!!!
Hello all - well nearly a year has passed since I first started down this conversation - car went in for it's first 12.5k service yesterday, and now believe I will never be able to find an answer.
Last year when first spoke to Mazda about the "ipod" option on my built in Sat Nav / 6CD player unit - they all looked very confused at the unit in my car but said they should be able to have a look when I bring it in for it's first service.
So took it in for it's service... one of their top techies came out... and said well no if this is a unit you fitted yourself then we can't do anything about an Ipod option.... when I said no.. this is the standard Mazda fitted unit to these models he looked at me strangely... I then had to produce the user manual that came with the car to show a picture of the unit... but he still didn't believe it was factory fitted... we went off looking for the nice colour brochure from last year (which has been replaced by a tiny 15 page "leaflet") -were unable to find last years brochure.
So basically he believes the 2009 Mazda 5 is uniqe in having this Sanyo Multimedia Sat Nav system fitted - they didn't use them before 2009 and aren't using them now
He agrees with my general principle in thinking that as their is a touch screen option for "IPOD" the unit probably can have an IPOD connected but even their Audio Specialist company have no idea how it would be done.
Interestingly the 2010 brochure ...sorry 15 page leaflet - they no longer do the TS, TS2, Sport, Sport Nav, Sport Nav Luxury models - they only do a TS, Takara, and Furano model... there is an "additional Accessory Naviation option" and that is for a Pioneer Entertainment system... maybe that is IPOD ready!! But I'll never know!!
So not only is the model of car no longer sold, but they have no infomration on the Sanyo head unit installed.
He did suggest maybe if "something were to happen" to the head unit - it would be replaced by the new Pioneer version and then they might be able to sort out an IPOD adaptor!!
If anyone does ever find a way of connecting an IPOD to the Sanyo model of head unit (see my other posts in this thread for photos) I'd be a very happy man.
Many thanks to all for their input / advice over the year

Did anyone ever get to the bottom of this? I ask as I have just bought a 2008 sport nav with the rear entertainment system installed, but I don't think it's been installed correctly as the audio doesn't come through the stereo as it says it should in the book, the book says it should be on aux2, i've had a look and the wiring for it is behind the stereo, but if i plug it in it comes through on aux1 but i lose the 3.5mm jack i use for my ipod, i too have an ipod option but cannot select it?
just a wiring diagram would be perfect!!!!

Hi Ford306,
Well I started the thread must be 3 years ago now! And short answer is no.
As the Sanyo Head Unit I have only seemed to be installed for one year neither Mazda or Sanyo were ever able to give any guidance.
Last thing I did get out of Mazda were a load of print outs from their computer system that showed wiring diagrams.
From that I was able to put the attached together. Sorry about quality of picture but only allowed to post small files on this forum.
It was a bit of help in that it helped conifrm the Standard Mazda Connection wiring on Plug 1, the Aux 1 and Bluetooth connection on Plug 2, it says Rear Entertainment System is Plug 3 (though I don't have that installed and never found the other end of the wires in the boot!), and Parking Assistant on plug 4..... However NONE of the diagrams showed Plug 5 which in my car is cabled, and nothing explaing what Plug 6 was for.
I still think Plug 6 is probably the iPOD connection but will never know as my car goes back in a while and have given up with trying now!
HOpe this helps and good luck.

Hi 6Mazda6 - yes my car also has the rear view parking camera. According to the diagrams I got (See my previous post) what I have marked as Plug 4 is labelled as Parking Assistant Unit... I assume this connects to the camera and maybe steering sensors - though I can't be 100% certain and not really wanting to take it out again to see what happens when you unplug it.
If it isn't plug 4 then it could explain what plug 5 is for - which was the connector none of the wiring diagrams explained.
But definitely not the mystery unused four pin plug 6.
Now I must go and order my new car... hmmm... mazda 5 again... or Ford C-Max this time!

Thanks for the diagrams! Its a shame they don't show the inputs for aux 2 as thats the ones I'd really like to find. I too have the camera but it doesn't plug into the 4 pin one that we think is probably the ipod connector! it looks to me that the connections shown in the diagrams for the rear entertainment unit are probably just for power, but mine (i think from memory) are spliced in with the power for the stereo, the lead that comes from the rear entertainment unit has a plug which goes into the socket where aux1 plugs in and has a socket for the original loom to plug into, but doing this way i loose the 3.5mm connection. I don't have the sockets in the boot either!
Thanks
Thanks

Well after starting this thread over 3 years ago I have just waved goodbye to my Mazda and will never know why someone working for Sanyo Multimedia went to the trouble of programming an IPOD button on the touchscreen when no one could ever work out how to connect an IPOD..... oh well was fun (not) trying to find out.
Sure I will be just as frustrated with the new shiney Mazda 5 sitting outside in its replacement with it's rather poor looking Tom Tom Sat Nav system... ok at least this does have a USB lead that hopefully somehow will connect to an ipod... but there again... maybe another 3 year quest is about to be started.
Good luck all.
