RE: Service Interval
Hello Dave,
I'm a new UK member. Just ordered a 08 Mazda 5 2.0d (143ps) Sport Nav.
Could I ask you whats your experience so far with regards to servicing. i.e. pricing for a Diesel...
Having never owned a Diesel before, I'm a little worried about the servicing costs !! Should have looked into this before I know !!
All the best
David

RE: Service Interval
Hi David,
I'm away from home this week so don't have the actual prices to hand, but as I said above there was a wide variation in prices for the same service from different dealers. The first service on the diesel is a lot more expensive - allegedly there are adjustments to be made after the initial 12,500 miles. I think it was in excess of £300 that I paid. Subsequent services seem to be cheaper - lets face it they don't do much! At my 25,000 service they claim to have changed the brake fluid as well as the usual oil + filter change. I think that one was around the £200 mark. I'll give you better figures next week. In each case I was quoted a price, which they stuck to, and was told there would be an extra £10 for the use of a courtesy car, but on both occassions the garage (Lythgoe in Bolton) waived the courtesy car fee when it came to paying the bill, which impressed me as a nice gesture.
I think you'll be pleased with your decision to go for the diesel engine, it's quiet and the car can shift, if you need it to (although you can actually see the fuel guage drop when you put your foot down - at least I'm sure I can!)
Shame diesel is around £5.40/gallon now!
Dave.

RE: Service Interval
Thanks for the reply Dave.
I was initially going to buy the Automatic TS2 model. But after doing some research into mpg, tax band etc etc didn't think that it was the car for me. Shame as I really wanted an Auto for a change. There was no option for accessorising it either. No cruise, climate etc etc.... Shame.
Also as I do a lot of miles now.. (64 miles a day school run!!) it seems to make sense to go for the Diesel version. After reading many reviews, the 143ps model seem to be the pick..If I have any reservations about the car, which by the way I still haven't got yet, they would be the dark tinted windows. Don't know if these have much detrimental effect for parking. Does the rear parking camera help that much ? Never used one before only the run of the mill beeping sensors on other cars.
Also, having not actually tried the sat-nav version, I am a little concerned that it wont be up to the standard of my TomTom.. Still I do like the idea of having it all built in. It can be very tiresome sticking and removing the screen holder..!!
Any other views, opinions of the car from you would be gratefully received. I know about the 'tyre issue' which hopefully now has been rectified on the 08 versions....
Regards

RE: Service Interval
I'm a new owner with a Mazda 5 Sport Nav 143HP TD, Galaxy Grey with the luxury pack. We've had her now for 2 weeks and am so far very impressed and that's coming from an RX8 which we loved to bits and really miss, but the 22mpg, 100% tax hike, and a rotary out of warranty were too much to bare.
So far we've averaged around 42mpg genuine against 39 mpg recorded on the computer and do 500 miles to a tank although the miles left figure had been on zero for a while .
The SatNav is good although the only things I miss from my phone SatNav is the 3D view and the live traffic info (TMC). Evidently, Mazda haven't paid the subscrition for this, which is around £200,000, so none of the Mazdas SatNavs fitted with TMC will work in the UK. However, that's not really much of a problem for me and the rest of it more than makes up for it. The postcode look-up is intuitve, as is the address entry, it only allows the next valid letters/numbers appear on the keyboard which makes entry easy. The POI seem accurate with addresses and phone numbers, and the whole system is fairly customisable. We used it to travel to the O2 arena this week and it had all the details in the system. The SatNav also has voice recognition for various functions as does the Audio system, which operates through the touch screen, and the Bluetooth. The car connects easily to both my N73 and my wife's Blackberry and you can store numbers in the car and access them with the voice recognition whilst on the move. The microphone for the phone could be better placed though, as you sound quite distant to callers. (I'll be working on that one!). The Ipod works through the MP3 Jack by the cigarette lighter but can only be controlled manually. (I'm working on that one too)
The parking camera is great unless it's raining in which case it's a bit blurred and is a bit more difficult to see at night although the reverse lights do help. It has a couple of parking aids for either reversing into a space or parallel parking and has lines on it to show you when you're 1m and then .5m away from an object. It also has lines that move with the steering which show you where the extremities of the car will be as you turn. I'm now using it in conjunction with the mirrors for reversing and keep looking for a screen when I'm in my work van.
I'm not sure why the first service should be any more expensive on the M5 diesel, I'll look into that as I'm a mechanic with my own business and do all my own servicing.
I hope this puts your mind at rest. The cars fantastic to drive and as afr as I know the 2008 facelift model has a revised rear suspension so unusual tyre wear shouldn't be an issue. Enjoy it!

RE: Service Interval
Hey NickC, thanks for the reply and information.! I tried to get the Lux Pack added when purchasing the car but was told there would be a 5 month wait for it !!?? Strange. Never mind.
Thanks for all the info re: the Satnav. I do have a couple more questions for you if you don't mind.....
1. Can you confirm that the 6 cd changer is MP3 cd compatible? Can't get confirmation of this anywhere
2. Are there European maps included on the Satnav?
I think thats about it for now.. Due to be picking the car up next Wednesday.. V.Excited !!
All the best
David

RE: Service Interval
Hi David,
I've not tried it but according to the book the CD player is MP3 compatible.
The SatNav has the Europe DVDs in the box (stored in a huge cavern behind the glovebox ,which also holds the vehicle documents etc.) and I think they're pre loaded, but again I haven't checked.
I'm not sure why there's the delay for the luxury pack. Maybe it was the colour/spec combination that caused the delay. We ordered ours and was told it would be about 3 weeks but it turned up in 10 days, although that meant we had less time to say goodbye to Rexy. Mind you I enjoyed the drive to trade it in...........I only had to go 16 miles so I put £5 worth of petrol in, as it was running on vapours, and due to rather spirited driving I didn't think I'd make it so I had to stop and put another £2 in. Boy I miss that car! Apart from the fuel economy .
The touch screen is motorised and folds down to allow access to the cd changer which takes the 6 cds plus the SatNav DVD, which is cool.
I'd recommend the front and rear parking sensors, which are a dealer fitted option, and although a bit pricey are a very neat fit and only have to save the bumper from one scrape to save you fitting cost. I haggled hard for the car but only managed 10% discount on the sensors, you may do better.
When do you get yours? And what colour did you go for?

RE: Service Interval
Thanks for all the info NickC. That does put my mind at rest regarding the MP3 compatibility. We play an awful lot of music at home and in the car, and it really makes a difference being able to have so many tracks on a cd.!
We went for a Galaxy Grey Sport Nav (143hp) with Luxury mats. (Which the dealer let us have for the price of the standard ones.)
I think we paid a good price in the end. I searched the internet car sale sites and printed off a couple of prices so I could go in armed ready for bartering ! In the end, with the mats, we paid £17,195. I think we did well.
We currently have a Renault scenic, so we are quite used to the size of this sort of vehicle and decided not to go for the parking sensors. My only concern was reversing, but seeing as it now has the parking camera (which I haven't used yet !) I assumed we wouldn't need the parking sensors as well. We shall see. Its an after-market fit so we could always go back to the dealer and get it fitted.
We are meant to be picking the car up next Wednesday. I shall have to try and get the petrol down to empty like you when I drive it in !!! (I'm quite good at returning hire cars empty when on holiday !!)
Once again thanks for all your info... and I would be interested in any updated reports you have on the car !! Are you going anywhere nice for the Bank holiday in her ??
All the best
David

RE: Service Interval
Hi David, sorry about the delayed reply - when I got back home the forum had gone faulty!
Not long now 'til you get your car. I'm very impressed with the price you've paid - good haggling there. I expect you'll be glad to see the back of your Scenic. I had a diesel Espace prior to the Mazda 5, It was so unreliable I was dreading it breaking down on the way to picking up the Mazda!
Anyway, to answer your question from way up the page, the first service was supposed to cost £267, and I really can't remember what the "adjustments" were that were essential at 12.5K. I thought it would be on the receipt but it doesn't mention anything. At my 12.5K service there were major tyre issues, with all sorts of adjustments to the bill to allow for Mazda's contribution to the new tyres etc., and I notice that I didn't pay that much in the end for the service. Good.
The 25K service was £182 and included a change of brake fluid.Allegedly.
As I said previously, I phoned a few dealers and prices for both these services varied by up to £100.
The tinted windows do not impair at all, you don't really notice the tint from the driver's point of view.
The Sat-Nav is great, but don't EVER ask it for the shortest route, it takes it rather too literally and it will take you off a lovely dual carriageway to cut off a corner by going down a windey B-road and then back on to the dual carriageway. The intuitive address and postcode entry really is clever.
The reversing camera takes a bit of getting used to, but the 1m and 0.5m lines make confident reversing up to walls etc quite easy. I have three gripes about the camera:
1, as mentioned further up the page, it becomes too blurred to discern after a bit of rain.
2, It is off-centre and as a result I often find myself parked in a carpark space at an angle rather than square in the space.
3, The screen of course is shared with the sat-nav, and dims when you put the lights on, which is great for reading the sat-nav but dumb for trying to see what's behind the car. It's dark outside, so the screen needs to be bright when reversing, not dark.
I've got lots more to tell you! However my wife is hinting that maybe I'd better fix the fence in the back garden, so I'll type more later.
Dave.
