Open one of the covers that's located on each side in the very back of the trunk and place one end of the trunk cover inside the compartment. Then the cover fits diagonally behind the two rear seats (hope this was understandable).
Not the ideal solution, but at least you get the cover out of the way.

I haven't checked this out, but I am sure we were told when we bought the car, the shelf can be put under the floor in that compartment when not in use.

Ahhh, a boot cover is the same as a trunk cover (which I would call a "hatch cover") I suppose I could have made an educated guess on that one...

... here we call it a hatch - for us the "trunk" is on sedans etc, where it is totally separate and not open to the main part of the vehicle.
