Default 04 bose cd player issues

so my girlfriend bought a 2004 6 a few months ago. so far everything is great, naturally its up to me to keep up with maintenance or the thing would have been dead by now but thats fine with me, i love working on my vehicles. Anyway shes been having a problem with her cd changer (the Bose system knocks pretty hard for stock), i searched the forum and google but i cant find any topics specific to her problem other then a thread on here about certain button combos turning on/off specific functions of the head unit.

so about a month ago she came home from work and told me her cd player isnt working. i went out to take a look thinking it was something simple. basically all other functions of the Bose stereo work except for the 6 disk changer, she cant play insert/eject any cds and there are no signs that any of the buttons for the cd player (on wheel or HU) are being recognized. i pulled the battery terminals and let the system drain all power and i also pulled all fuses related to the stereo system in hopes a simple restart would take care of it, i was wrong. when this issue first started she had all 6 disks full and then a week ago it started working again and she pulled all but 2 disks out, and as quick as it was working, it was dead again.

Im a VW guy (dont hate) so i have no idea how proceed further with diagnosis/repair so if any one has some info pertaining to this problem please lend me some help.

More than likely the CD unit is dying/dead.

Depending on where you are in the world start looking for a 2nd hand factory Bose stereo.

For the age off the vehicle, pulling the whole unit out & sending away for repair may not be worth it.

I figured it was going to need a replacement, i just wanted to see if this was a common problem with a simple fix. Im in nj, im sure i can find one second hand and local. i also have good friend who owns a shop, i forgot the name of the company but they do alot of new, salvage and referb interior parts. everything from seats to steroes so ill give him a call monday and see what i can get. thanks for the reply
