Broken dash compartment

Broken dash compartment
Just bought a used but well maintained, good looking 2005 Mazda6. It has a broken dash compartment. The compartment is on top and in the middle of the dash. It appears to be the right side hinged area at the dash and not the lid. Is there a replacement compartment or a "fix" for this? TIA - Henry

It's the center dash compartment
I looked at it closer and the hinge is broken at the lid and the base. I need a whole new unit, or used one. It is a black. Dealer wants between $84-$104 for it. Any suggestions on where to get a used one? Looks like its held in with two screws, but how do you remove the digital display to access the screws? TIA! Henry

Hi Sheldon,
I'm in San Diego California, 92154. I am interested in your dash compartment. How do you remove the digital display to access the screws? Does it just pop out, by prying on it? I don't want to break the digital part, lol! That would suck.

your broken dash
Hey bud, I have a broken digital display that I just figured out how to get to. This is on a 2005 mazda 6. I may be explaining too much, but here it is. That digital display is mounted inside that dash box. The two screws are holding the box in, not the display itself. The snaps for the display holding it in are inaccessible without pulling the dash compartment. out first.
Of course, this is assuming you took out the center stereo display first. To assume you haven't, here's what you have to do:
You will have to remove the cup holder and shift cover, then pull out the cigarette lighter. This will expose 2 screws holding the center module cover at the bottom. Pull off the vent control ***** and you'll find two more screws. Finally, you'll have to take off the glove box, and look up toward the center module under there, and you'll see a bolt (took me a moment to find it) that's holding the stereo in place. You have to pull it all the way out. You'll need a really small-handle socket wrench, and definitely an extension otherwise. Then all that remains is 6 snap-in clips on that center module that should just pop out, but you can use a screwdriver to help each clip if you want.
Center module/stereo will then pull out, and the box you're trying to get to pops out after removing the two screws.
Fun, huh? The part you're looking for I saw yesterday on ebay. It was $60 plus shipping, and it came with a new information display and compartment, but there was only one color, I think. Hope that helps.

Excellent info! Just what I was looking for; how to remove the dash compartment. For $60 plus shipping, I'd rather buy brand new for $84. If I can get it between $40-50, then that may be more reasonable. I thought all dash's were black? Just the lower portion have colors, right? Just checking.
