Default Buy Used 2004? - Check Engine Light

Am hoping for some qualified advice. I'm considering used 2004 with 116,000 Miles. It looks to be in pretty good shape. But the check engine light won't turn off. The dealer (Ford/Hyundai) says his scanner won't communicate with the car and I'll have to take it to someone else to diagnose. Does this sound right?

Also wondering if there's anything specific I should look for in a car this age? Have always owned Subarus... this would be my first mazda ever, but have read good things.

Thanks People!!

The way I see it, if they want you to but the vehicle, then they will diagnose and repair what ever the problem is. If not then leave it where it sits. Just my $.02.

If it has a V6 engine I'd avoid it; there are just too many complaints of premature engine failure from V6 owners out there to make that a wise choice.
