easyfix mazda6 console cup holder - 1 minute!
Hi Folks
I have been really upset with the cupholder in my 6, since it wouldn't close anymore. The lid used to click closed, but now it stays open all the time. But i have now fixed it.
Cupholder panel - pull straight up towards the roof, I found pulling with 1 hand squeezing the thin bar @ the brake handle and the other on the opposite side of the cupholder panel worked best. If you have a cupholder with the lid, don't pull up on the lid. (with help from https://www.mazdaforum.com/m_55476/tm.htm)
Once out, notice a small circular spring on the back of the unit. Using a small pointy pliers, remove the spring and attach it to the front of the unit. Now instead of the spring holding it open, it holds it closed!!!
Pressing on the back of the lid opens it, and placing a drink in will hold it open, but as soon as you let go it closes - how brilliant!!!!
Hope this helps someone.

Most likely you have some kind of residue that has gotten into the locking feature of the cupholder lid (pop, coffee, etc.)
If you pull the cupholder out, you'll notice a small are that hangs off of the side of the lid, this arm has a bullet shaped tip on it and goes into a small plunger-like device (when the bullet goes in, it compresses the plunger and actuates the lock, pressing again releases the lock and allows the lid to open.) Clean out the inside of this small lock feature (you can pull it out of the cupholder assembly if you're careful. Soak it in alcohol and repeatedly drain it. This should get the lock working again.

I had a look at that, but all the clips had been broken. The part that pushes in is quite flimsy, and broke off on both sides. What you suggested is exactly what I thought first, and tried to clean it with a steam cleaner before finding out how to remove it from the console.
