Mazda 6 air cleaner box

Mazda 6 air cleaner box
I have a 2007 Mazda 6 Diesel Sport. (this is a late model of the first Mazda 6)
I needed to change the high beam bulb and to get room to do this I removed the air cleaner box and that was simple enough.
Fitting the bulb is quite awkward but I managed it with the help of a mirror.
My problem is as follows:
On the top of the air cleaner box on the left hand side as you face the car there are two narrow bore rubber pipes. I have accidentally broken the stubs that these pipes push onto so they will no longer be connected to the cleaner box.
I have started the engine and it all seems fine.
I imagine these pipes are something to do with the engine management.
Can anyone tell me if they are important or if any damage could be done by running without them connected?
