Default MAZDA 6 UPDATES

Does anyone know if we are informed if there is an update due for our vehicles? Something like a letter from Mazda? I just had my check engine light go on and all it needed was an update. However,I was charged for it. I thought there was a real issue with the car, isnt that what the check engine light means? In my manual there isnt anything stating that the car may need a computer update. It tells you not to drive fast, and that there could be an electical or emission issue and to take it to a mazda dealer asap. I know some people who have towed their vehicles there because of this....can anyone relate?

A CEL doesn't have to mean that something is seriously wrong with your engine, but it can. CEL's can be thrown by anything from asimpleloose gas cap, to a faulty throttle position sensor, or detonation problems (knock). This does not mean that you should take them for granted, but they shouldn't make you panic either. When one is thrown, take it to a place like Auto Zone, Pep boys, etc. and have them plug in their reader to the car's ECU and get the error code, this will tell you what needs to be done and best of all, it's free.

You shouldn't have been charged any money (if I understood you correctly) for them to do a service inspection/update. I'd go back to the dealer and raise hell.
