semi automatic
when I throw it in "manual" and I take off from a stop, the car seems to go faster. I'm not accelerating any harder than I do when in auto. is this because I'm controlling when to shift or what?

Yes! In the manual function you are riding out the gears at a higher rpm, automatic function shifts much sooner and tends to shift before you reach higher rpms

Ginia, be aware that you WILL burn fuel faster that way too. That's OK as long as you know it in advance. Sometimes, it's just worth it for the drive.
The 2-6 series cars I had as loaners from the dealer had the auto, Man-U-Matic as I like to call them, and on it's own can be a very boring experience. It's still a fluid driven automatic w/a torque converter (slushbox) and I didn't have them long enough to become completely familiar with the ins and outs of manual shifting them, but can see where it helps the Zoom-Zoom experience.
Rock On!!

He's talking about modifying the stock airbox.
Removing the resonator, adding a K&N panel filter, and/or cutting holes in "strategic places in the lower box.
Things like that.
BTW: Virginia, you're very welcome.

oh. well, that sounds like too much trouble for me, I'll just buy a cai one of these days...speaking of which, can I buy a mazdaspeed6 cai? I saw them for sale on mazda's website. I know the speed6 is the 3.0, but it never hurts to ask

The Speed 6 has a 2.3L DISI engine, it's not a 3.0 so it would be a different C.A.I.

Ginia, DISI is Mazdas acronym for direct fuel injection. It squirts fuel directly into the cylinder @ very high pressure instead of into the intake manifold. In this case, the Speed6 also comes w/a turbocharger too. Completely different.
Vince!! Congrats on a 200 post count. 'Can't call you a post-*****.
