Default Synthetic vs. Conventional

I have 2004 M6s and run full synthetic pennzoil platinum. Anyone else running full synthetic? Does it really make a difference?

Yes it makes a difference, no you won't notice, but your engine will. Synthetic oil is "cleaner" than conventional oil, but that I mean more pure with no contaminants. It reduces friction in the engine further than conventional oil, thus putting less stress on the motor and allowing it to actually make more power and have better fuel economy. I traditionally use synthetic oil and change it every 5K miles. If everything is cool, the oil will almost still look new when you take it out. Make sure, if you change your oil yourself, to always take some oil between your fingertips and look at it in the light for metal flakes or other debris/contaminats as well. If its nice n clean n smooth, all is well.

I always change my oil myself and the fluid always looks like new when I change it, makes me wonder if I am changing it too soon. Usually every 4000-6000 mile, sometimes 3000

Mineral oil is just fine...be sure and change it every 3k miles. Synthetic oil is better in a newer engine (2000 and newer), as long as it's ALWAYS been synthetic oil in the engine. Then you can comfortably lengthen the oil change interval to 5k-6k miles. I'm running mineral oil in my '04 6s Wagon, only because the previous owner did so for the 28k miles that she owned it. Cheers mate,

David

I would never go longer than 5,000 miles between oil changes, no matter what kind of car it is. If you car sets for a long time and doesnt get driven alot I wouldnt go longer than 6 months without changing the oil.

The owner's manual for the M6s says to change oil every 4000 for aggressive driver's and 7000 for average driver's.

So, what is this about not using Synthetic if you ran it on normal for a long time? Someone said something about synthetic pulling out the parafin in certain oils (such as quaker state). I've heard some people say you should run it on regular for the first 10 to 15k, then you can go to synthetic (think that was a sport truck magazine).

What's the general consesus with this?
