just make sure whatever you replace them with is also in 225/50/17 measurements
WWW/SS/RR
the "W" represent width of rim (in milimeters)
the "S" represent sidewall size (in millimeters)
the "R" represents rim (wheel) diameter in inches
those measure ments are not the name of the tires (I couldn't tell but it seems like you thought 225/50/17 was the name of your tire)

Where did you trade your tires in to? I want to get rid of my 225/50/17 (stock michelins) [:'(] I am just not willing to dish out money for brand new tires when mine are fine right now..so a trade in somewhere would be nice.

Almost correct, let me clarify:
The W's in the example are tread width, not rim width
The S's in the example are not sidewall size, but rather the ratio of sidewall height to tread width
For example a 235/50/17 will be 10mm wider tread than a 225/50/17, and will also be slightly taller tire overall, because the "50" series is a function of the "235" tread width.

I'll probably end up getting 50k plus on mine since I am almost at 40k miles and still have 7/32 of tread left. But I put 40-50k cuz I am not quite there yet!

7/32's left?? Wow that is awesome , good rotations on those puppies i bet, i have 42k and just about done, maybe 2 k or so left ..

I must ask...how do you know so much about tires? I'm sitting here like "Damn, he knows as much as I do!"

Spark: I knew about the tread thing, I just figured the tread would be about equal to rim size. A more proper term still would be contact patch. As for the 2nd 2 digits being a ratio I am almost ceretain that it is a milimeter readout from a story I read on "Choosing the Right Tires" in a tuner magazene. I still could be wrong.

I've read many tire comparisons, tests and owner surveys: The Pirelli P Zero Neno m+s is far better than the OEM Michelin. Canadian Mazda dealers also sell Pirelli tires, but I still have to pay $300 US for the trade-in before I picked up my new V6. If you really feel that the OEM tires are crap, talk to the dealer and do a trade BEFORE you p/u your $20,000 new car. A few hundred dollars are relatively peanuts when you can enjoy the new ride from day 1. I don't want to suffer a couple of years to wear out the crap OEM tires before putting on the good stuff.
Tire size clarification: 225/45-17: 225 is the width in mm, 45 is the side wall height aspect ratio ( 225 X 45%=101.25mm) then we switch to inches for 17" rim. Also make sure that the replacement tire's speed (H, V, W, etc.) and load (91, 93, etc.) ratings are at least equal to the OEM's. I always feel that those 4 patches of rubber are the most important and easily upgradeable feature of any car. What's horsepower when your tires can't handle it ?

Can anyone tell me what tires are good for speed and handling on dry land? I live in Vegas and it never rains or snows here
