I'm not a M6 owner, so I couldn't tell you what the limits are. However...

A wider tire will yield a more "planted" feel, i.e. more grip - that's the main advantage. There aren't that many important disadvantages...unless you drive on heavy snow. Then again, if you do that, you probably already have a set of dedicated snow tires anyway.

You can go up to a 225 width on the stock 17x7" wheels.

I regularly run 225/45ZR18 on 18x8 wheels on my wife's car with no issues (6Sportwagon)

as far as how wide of a tire can the car physically run without poking out of the wheel well, 245 in front and 235 in the rear (with the correct offsets ofcourse) however, 224/45 r17 or 215/50 r17 are the sizes you should restrict yourself to with the stock wheels as they are the one you can get with the proper load ratings. the 225's will actually be a tad cheaper (as they are a more common size) but your speedo will read higher than you are actually going.
Disadvantages to wider tires would be, if you buy crappy tires that don't evacuate water properly they can hydroplane easier, but to get a case like that you have to go with some REALLY crappy tires, or be a moron na dnor have your tires inflated properly. Other than that, ther is no real disadvantage that i can think of off hand.

To maintain the same over all diameter, wider tire means shorter side wall. The steering will be quicker (less side wall to flex), the grip will be better (more rubber on the road) and the ride will be more bumpy (less side wall to cushion the bump). With the factory 17' rim, you are prettywell limited to 225/45, but you'll have lots of good choices at very reasonable prices. Do some research @ www.tirerack.com, I found it quite informative. Good Luck.

I'd say no...the power steering in modern cars can more than overcome any resistance due to slightly wider tires.

I ran 225/45R17 on my Mazda3 and it handled great. Same thing with my wife's 6Sportwagon (225/45R18)

I agree. The over all difference you'll feel will mainly be from driving with a new set of tires rather than the small increase in width and decrease in side wall when you switch from 215/50 to 225/45.

Of course this varries from tire to tire as well. With my RE01R's the steering is 150% more direct and imediate, but with the Yokohama YK520's I run on the street, there is a ****load more treadflex and as such the steering feels much less direct. So there really isn't a catchall as to how the tires will affect the way your car handles, it really boils down to the individual tires that you buy. Oh, and for my previous anecdote, both tires are sized 225/45R17.

ent from the stock 205/55/16 wheels on my car to a 225/45/17 which kept the speedo correct and resulted in nothing more than a better handling car. That's probably your best bet to give you the most size options as well. Probably one of the most common 17'2 on the market at the moment.
