Tires, and Display questions?
(2005 Mazda 6)
Hi guys. I hope everyone is enjoying their 6 as much as I am. Just two questions. My stock P215 (17in) Michelin tires are coming to a end. The tires seemed to do ok. They have 48,000 miles on them. How many miles has everyone got on them? Dealer wants $260 each. What are everyones opinions of those stock tires. Are there better tires out there that are reasonably priced? I feel as I could do better.
Secondly, the display above the Bose/Cd player does not display the climate control, fan speed, A/C and etc. I can see there are spots for it. But there is no light.. It only displays the time, temperature, cd track info and that is it. Is this the way it is suppose to be? I find that hard to believe! Peace out guys!

The Michelin's honestly suck. They are over priced, and don't perform all that great. Also, my race tires don't even cost $260 each, don't buy from the stealership. There should be something like a discount tire near you. Go to one of those, they will charge you less and things like rotation and balancing are free (read included in price, unless it get's messed up somehow then the redo really is free). As for what tires, on the street I run Yokohama YK520's I'd recomend them if your main concern is longevity, quiet ride, and not performance. They can be pushed a little, but they are more of a touring tire than a high preformance tire. For a more performance minded tire, I've heard lots of good things about the General Exclaim UHP's, haven't used them myself, but I've talked to several people who were quite happy with them. The only other setup i can talk about with much authority when it comes to tires is motorsports/autocross level street tires, but those wear out after about 15k miles...or a season's worth of autocrosses and practice days, so I doubt those are what you are after.

I agree with CKeffer, the Michelins are worth that kind of $. There are many others tires that are better and cheaper. Go to tirerack.com and do some research, you'll find lots of choices. GOOD LUCK.
The dispalys that won't light up are cars that come with climate control. Mazda makes one display to catch all, if you have climate control then it will show you the Temp. fan speed, etc.

ahh ok
Thanks guys. Yeah, I just wanted some views from you guys. The Michelins are certainly overpriced. But I did get some good wear on them. I will problably take them off at 55,000 miles or so!

If wear is your main concern, then I can't recomend the yoko's enough. I have had these for more than a year and they still have 3/4 tread...and I'm not exactly easy on tires. They grip pretty well in wet as well as dry. Oh and i believe that the 215/50 R17's have a 60K mile warrantee.

ahh the yoko's
Well, I would like something that is a happy medium between good wear, performance and noise level. The Michelins were decent tires. Certainly good on wear. I am not so sure why everyone gives thems such a bad rap. Yes, they do have a 60,000 warranty deal...
