1992 protege engine(DOHC or SOHC)
Hey guys, I just bought a 92 protege from a kid who thought that he blew up the engine. i was looking around to find a new motor however i cant find any SOHC 1.8 liter motor for that car. All that i can find on ebay and anywhere are 1.8 liter DOHC. i was also looking around and it said that you can only get DOHC in the LX model(which it is) so whats going on here? did they offer the SOHC in LX? and also would i just need to put in a new computer if i got a DOHC motor?

RE: 1992 protege engine(DOHC or SOHC)
There are a few ways to figure out what the car is, if the VIN begins with JM1BG224 it's a Dx and has a SOHC engine. If it says JM1BG226 it's an LX and has a DOHC engine. Also, it it has electric windows and mirrors, it's prolly an LX.
All that info goes out the window if your car is not a U.S. model. I'l scrounge around on Ebay an find some links to pics.

The engine in the below link is a DOHC engine.

THe below pic is a poorly maintained SOHC. BTW, your car might have been crashed and have the wrong stickers on the fenders. Seen it several times.

What does this mean to Canadian members? I have yet to see any models with the DOHC engine or any GTs. Is an engine swap the only way to get the DOHC engine for us Canadians? If this is so that sucks. What about the DOHC motors in Fords, will they fit in a Mazda? Thanks for any help, I want the DOHC, bad. Hey 'blazerboy', if you need a SOHC come to scrap yards in Ontario thats all we have.
