Hello - The 3 is a good choice for several reasons. Since you asked about reliability, from what I have learned reliability is good as it is with most Mazdas (Cx7s excepted). I've had mine for nearly 4 months with no problems but that's really not long enough to draw any conclusions.
Discounts vary by dealer depending how many of which model they have in stock. With credit tight the cars aren't moving off the lots like they want so you should be able to get a discount - I've seen $500 - $1000 locally depending on model. They have a bit more to play with with the S package so these get a deeper cut.
You didn't mention which model you are interested in. My recommendation is the 5 door since it comes standard with everything anyone would want (except the turbo if you're so inclined) including the 2.3L engine, bigger wheels/tires, air, cruise, etc. etc. I strongly recommend the manual transmission however. I just don't think there is a 4 cyl engine out there that isn't affected adversely by an automatic with the possible exception of a couple of turbo models from Audi and Volvo (5cyl). Drive both to make up your own mind though.
You really can't go wrong with any 3. They are designed well and screwed together better than most and you're right about the interiors - they are a cut above and, surprise, surprise, have great seats.

Most definitely go with the 3 hatchback. My 2004 is doing great despite having over 137,000 on it ( I drive a lot ). It is amazing the amount of stuff you can haul in that as well (when necessary). Just have fun finding some tires to protect your wheels. The potholes as you know in Mass are awful, and have caused havoc on my OE rims. I purchased some a little over a year ago from discounttire.com and those have been affected by the roads, as well as, according to the dealer, my rough riding Falken 452's.
You will LOVE the 3, Trust me.
