Default Low Beam HID headlight ballast

We have a 2006 MPV and the low beams stopped working on the drivers side headlight. We took it to the auto sparky and they said $800 to replace the ‘HID Headlight Ballast’ the bulb itself is working fine it’s the ballast that needs replacing but the bulb will need replacing at the same time as this can cause issues if you replace the ballast but not the bulb. Any help on how to replace the ballast myself and save us $800 would be very much appreciated. Replacing the bulb seems pretty straight forward it’s the ballast I’ve never heard of and don’t know why it’s so expensive to replace. Thanks in advance

Search Trade Me for either a replacement headlamp or a aftermarket HID ballast.

I was wondering if its okay to replace the whole headlight if I can find a second hand one at a wreckers is it safe to just change it out? I've been told there's some dangerous voltage involved or something

Disconnect the battery and wait about 10 minutes before touching the headlamps.
