Mazda 2 owner from Malta re key
Have a 3 year Mazda2 Classic right hand drive. My remote jack knife key just went dead after changing battery as it was playing up...Any suggestions as to what is the cause? Mazda agents told me might be module or buy new key

It's likely it just needs to be reprogrammed to the car. Has anyone tried this?
And no, I'm not sure how to do it, but here in the States I know it does require at least one working key to do it.
It may be time to see your dealer.

Thank you for your reply. Took it to dealer who is the importer of Mazda. Was told that for a check up of moduyle it is around 70 US dollars and to reprogram module around 500 dollars!! I will see maybe I find something or someone who can help but thank you for your reply much appriciated.

Well, you could try resetting the PCM by disconnecting and reconnecting the battery? Leave it disconnected for at least 1/2 hr before reconnecting. It usually takes the computer about 100 miles (+/-) to re-learn the engine settings, and you will lose your clock, tripometer and radio settings as well, so you may want to write them down before hand, if important to you. But if that works for the key, it should be functional immediately.
It's not the module (PCM) that needs reprogramming, IMO, but the key itself which has a transponder in it that the car is currently not recognizing. Simply resetting the module (PCM) may do the trick. Worth a try and only takes 1/2 hr of your time?
If that doesn't work then having the key reprogrammed to the car should do it, and it shouldn't costy $500 to do that. I know it only takes a few minutes.
Anyway, best of luck to you. I hope the easy/cheap solution works out.

Yers, there are a number of walk-throughs or how-to's on the web concerning this issue. Also to program a new central locking transponder. But for some unknown reason, not all procedures work in all countries the same way, but its certainly worth a try.
I purchased a 3rd key shortly after buying the car (in '04.) It only took them a few minutes to program it to the car. I had to have my two other keys there to set the security code the same. They inserted the key into the ignition switch and turn it on briefly. Then inserted the second one and I believe that's when they did the third key.
But as I said, the procedure may have changed or it may not be the same where you are.
All you can do is look around and try all the possibilities. One "should" work for you? :crossed-fingers:
