Default Dealerships grrr

My wife took our 2007 3i in for it's 15,000mi service. They reccomended that she flush the trans fluid, saying they've been seeing that 3's need it at roughly 15k to 20k. Am I the only one who thinks that sounds fishy? With the cost of the normal 15k service and the trans flush, the bill came to over $200 and that was after she told them they must be completely insane to think she's going to pay that kind of money for those services. Has anyone else out there had trouble with their dealer's service department? Do the Mazda dealerships offer anything that the local Quick/Jiffy/SupaDupaFast/lube doesn't? I have a hard time believing that I should be paying over $60 for every 5k service I have done, $90 at 15k and $130 for a trans flush. Would someone please educate me? I have been driving a really used car, doing my own oil changes, for too long and get somewhat confused when I look under the hood of this thing. It's like a plastic components factory blew up under my hood.

There is nothing that is rocket science on these cars...If you service your other cars, you can service these.

Hate to say it but I think your dealer suckered you into a fluid change you didn't need. I can't remember now if it is 30K or 50K when you need to change the tranny fluid, but I know it's not 15K.

I don't go to the dealership to have my oil change. Find a local oil change place that uses Valvoline (my personal preference) and call it a day.

If you look in the manual I think the Tranny is at 60K miles or maybe even 100K. Also, the interval is now 7500miles for oil and filter.

I don't let dealerships touch my car for anything that they don't need to. Their prices are astronomical and need to be brought down.

They strong armed your wife thinking she will go, "really? Yeah, do it." There are people out there that try that and they succeed.

I also do checks on my internals if they need replacing, ie you mark it in a hidden location and ask to see the old part. If mark isn't there...voila, you have then beaten to a pulp for lying.

That sounds VERY fishy. "Fishy" may not be a strong enough word, actually.

5K service? According to the manual, the only service requiredevery 5Kis an oil+filter change and fluid level checks. That's not $60 worth of work to me. As you say, a good oil change place will do that for under $35 including tax ... and they might even use better oil than whatever your dealer uses.

FYI, the owners manual hastwo maintenance schedules, Schedule 1 is intervals for ideal conditions,Schedule 2 is intervals for harsher conditions. 5K is the harsh conditions oil change interval.

The manual doesn't recommend anything substantial until you hit 30K or 35K, and even then its replace the air filter, tighten the nuts and bolts on the chassis and body, adjust drive belt tension, and lots of inspecting.

I don'tsee anything in the manualabout changing the automatic transmission fluid. You'd probably want to do it, maybeat 30K or 60K, but to suggest its needed at 15K seemslike a lie.

i would never go that long without changing the oil
my maximum is 5000kms... and i run pure quaker state synthetic and filters.
i think 5000kms is the recommended service interval for all cars....
when u wait that long, the oil starts to loose its properties.
also, gas mileage will be effected too....
oh, and you can argue all you want, but just remember..... i am a quicklube technician!!..... and have been to many hours lond seminars.... on just oil. (meh, at least there was pizza)

If you're changing synthetic oil every 5000 kms (3000 miles), you're wasting a pile of money dentinger.

Both oil and engine tolerances have gotten much better over the years, that's why the mileage between changes has increased. Quick lube places still recommend a change every 3,000 miles because they are there to sell oil.

I monitor the fluid level between changes to make sure it never gets low, but I change my oil ~ every 6,000 miles.

That explains it....you hit the time constraint before the mileage.

I average 2000 miles/month, so at your rate it would be an oil change every6 weeks. Not exactly something I feel is necessary.

You lost ALL credibilty at the "i am a quicklube technician!!". Sorry but I don't trust a quick/jiffy/alley lube technician AT ALL. I don't let them near my car because you sir have the 3000 mile DRILLED into your head.

There have been MANY studies showing that modern cars no longer need oil every 3K miles since there is now weight/detergent to oils now.

Independant Study and Mobil 1 lasted 18,000 miles. That's $300 you spent and $50 they spent. Now I would never let my car go over 7500 miles between changes, but that shows you. It works and survives!
