To Scott,
What's up with this, Scott?
It took Ford years to come clean about a faulty cruise control switch and now the fix is to put a fuseable link in the circuit instead of actually FIXING the problem.
Here's the history: Yesterday, my store had inventory. Our Asst Grocery Mgr drove a 2001 Ford F150 Harley Davidson Ed which he absolutely adored. Black, and always clean and shiny... even cleaner than my car. ('Course he is still single and lives in an apartment.) I parked across from him and about 6 spaces up @ 4:25AM. At approx 4:40 AM one of our Night Stocker came into the Wareroom and loudly stated, Tony!! Your truck is on fire!!!
Tony thought he was kidding, but not for long. His truck was indeed on fire and melted all over the parking lot.
That's personal story #1.
Personal story #2:
About a year ago I was also at work and having a not-so-great day. So I took a break out in front of the store and walked toward the service/access road to/from the highway (Mopac/Loop 1 for those who know Austin.) There was a Ford Windstar van waiting @ the light to make a left turn. Before I knew it the driver jumped out as the cab and engine compartment filled w/smoke. Within a few minute the entire van was engulfed in flames. The fire department is literally across the street so it did not take them long to get there. They opened the hood upon arrival and the flames were shooting up 6' past the roof line of the van.
While reading up on this problem, it was stated that the actual cause is that brake fluid may leak into and corrode the wiring in the engine compartment causing the potential fire.
Now call me crazy, but putting a fuseable link in the system will only shut the system down but will NOT solve the problem, only AVOID a fire hazard.
Should this happen, it would still be up to the owner to pay to have his/her cruise control fixed so that it will work again.
Is that about right?

He was surprisingly calm about it! We all thought that it would be the end of him for at least that day. His comment was that it is only a "material thing." He stayed at work all day yesterday and was back again today... sans his truck. I applaud him for that. I'm sure most of us would have been an emotional mess for a while after.
I went to look at the space where he had parked yesterday, today after work. The fog lights were on the ground sans lenses and pointed up to the sky. The spider-webbed windshield was there. Remnants of the front end were there too. But the most interesting, most telling thing about how hot that fire got was the fact that half of the radiator was lying on the ground too. Both tanks were melted off (plastic,) but also the other half of the radiator CORE had melted away too and left this singed edge where it used to be whole.
Kind of bizarre to see it that way.
He will be looking for another HD F150 when the insurance is settled.
One thing I didn't mention in my first post was that Ford is not liable for any fire after Dec 2005, but is if anyone was hurt or property damage had occurred due to the fire. A law firm was listed in one or more of the articles I saw that is handling those cases.
If like Tony, you didn't immediately answer the call (recall) and your vehicle catches fire, it is between you and your insurance company.
Nice, huh? Smooth (legal) move, Ford. Nice side-step of legal responsibility.
