What Is Your Favorite Non-Mazda, That You"ve Owned
#96
I owned: '68 beetle 1300, '71 beetle 1302, '68 Peugeot 304, '71 Peugeot 304, 86 Mazda 323, '94 Ford Aerostar, still own '03 Windstar and '98 Mazda Protege.
My wife had: '81 Mercury Capri, '86 Chevrolet Cavalier wagon, '94 Geo Prizm, and she has an '00 Ford Contour 2L.
I also drove for an appreciable distance, but never owned: Renault 4, Audi 50, MB 200 Diesel, Ford Taunus (German), Opel Rekord, Opel Kadett, VW transporter, Fiat 500 (old), Fiat 127, Fiat Uno, BMW 1600, Jaguar S-Type, Landrover, Citroen 2CV, Citroen Visa 2 cyl, Mitsubishi Colt, Dodge Shadow ES, Audi 80, Pontiac Grand Prix and a few more.
My favorite non Mazda I owned was a Peugeot 304, a very comfortable modern family tourer, rust and all.
Memorable cars that I drove were: a great handling Ford Contour, an extremely frugal Renault 4, an extremely fast Dodge Shadow ES (6 cyl), and for smiles a white Fiat 500 with holes in the cloth roof, nicknamed "the salt shaker".
And the coolest car I ever sat in, only sat in and drooled over: Gilles Villeneuve's Ferrari Formula 1 car sitting in the lobby of Scuderia Ferrari in Maranello, Italy.

1989 Probe GT 4 cylinder Turbo. I loved power shifting from 1st to 2nd and slightly spinning the wheels in 2nd. I had a portable Sony Car Cd Player and a cassette deck, equalizer and big amp in the back. Went camping with an extra battery. Took extra speakers just for camping, otherwise had 2 Cerwin Vega 6x9's and 2 Cerwin Vega 12" Subs in car alll the time. I remember this car did not run right----i thought timing should be advanced. Dealer did nothing----it was in spec. It had a distributor that could be easily adjusted. I fiddled with it and advanced timing while still getting maximum boost (came with boost gauge). It ran great after that.

My favorite car before the Mazda was a 1985 VW Jetta 5 speed. No power anything on it.
Drove it flat out from New England to the Finger Lakes once, she handled very well.
Wife hated it, so it had to go. It had 345,000 miles on it when I sold it.

My Toyota Corolla from 1984 was a gem until it was smashed in a car accident 10 years ago (it wasn't me driving!). It caused almost no problems at all and it proved to have good protection (just bruises from the seatbelt to the driver). The engine hood looked like an inverted V...
One of the reasons why the Mazda 626 hatchback was bought - long deformation zone at the front and reasonable chap at the time!
